Tandem guided tours for school groups through Kunsthalle Basel and S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum

Culture under one roof

Kunsthalle Basel and S AM Schweizerisches Architekturmuseum are united not only by a common roof, but also by their mutual enthusiasm for art, culture, and society. They unite contemporary artistic positions with current topics related to architecture and urban development. In these joint tours, these synergies will be made tangible, interfaces will be drawn, and differences and meanings for society will be discussed.

The tours are geared toward particular school levels and supplemented with interactive and participatory elements. Students will experience lively exchanges between the two institutions, and be encouraged to consider art and architecture together, in an interdisciplinary way.

Tandem guided tours through the exhibitions INFORMATION (Today) and MOCK-UP
The group exhibition INFORMATION (Today) explores data-based capitalism in the twenty-first century, which manifests in encrypted networks, digital currencies, artificial intelligence, and a multitude of other phenomena that determine our everyday life from the background. These digital mechanisms will be juxtaposed with the architectural mock-up, a physical 1:1 scale model of a facade or other part of a building intended to test and/or demonstrate a design element.

Tandem guided tours through the exhibitions by Michaela Eichwald and MOCK-UP
German artist Michaela Eichwald presents new paintings that reimagine art history’s most classic genre. Her lush, thickly layered surfaces are made on unconventional substrates such as imitation leather or car seat upholstery, and her imagery hovers between abstraction and figuration, language and gesture. Her practice is contrasted with the mock-up, or 1:1 scale model of a facade or part of a building that is built before the actual construction in order to test and/or demonstrate a design element. The role of these simulations in the design process, as well as their enigmatic appeal, will be explored from various angles. Gestural painting meets architectural models—both subject to external influences in ways that will prove interesting.
