Glowing red and taking the outline of a stiletto, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins’s edition reproduces a neon sign specifically made for and installed at the Kunsthalle Bar from September to October 2019. The sign was inspired by the heels worn by Filip Rutkowski, one of Baczynski-Jenkins’s frequent collaborators, who performed in the exhibition Such Feeling by Baczynski-Jenkins at Kunsthalle Basel from 27 September to 13 October 2019.

The edition is intimately connected, for the artist, to the ideas of collectivity and community that drive his practice and thus includes a conceptual protocol: The neon is to be lit during social gatherings and in the presence of someone wearing high heels. Each time the neon is switched on, one person should open the closest window or door to the outside and call the name “Lula” loudly, once, as if calling out for someone who is far away, to come into the venue.
