Die bulgarische, in Amsterdam lebende Performancekünstlerin Zhana Ivanova (*1977) hat in der Kunsthalle Basel ihre erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung. Da ihre Performances sich einerseits oft mit der Sichtbarmachung von gesellschaftlichen Normen, Regeln und Strukturen beschäftigen und andererseits sich häufig der Zeitform der Zukunft als auch der Vorhersagung bedienen, nutzt diese Ausstellung ein ähnliches Verfahren. Das Projekt der Kunsthalle Basel wird die Normen, Regeln und Strukturen des Ausstellungsmachens offen verhandeln und in einer unbestimmten Zukunft ansiedeln. Mit dem Titel Ongoing Retrospective wird die Ausstellung das bekannte Format der Retrospektive umkehren: Normalerweise blickt eine Retrospektive auf eine lange, etablierte Künstlerkarriere zurück, hier steht sie jedoch am Anfang der Laufbahn dieser jungen Künstlerin, um gemeinsam mit ihr voran in die Zukunft zu blicken. Die Ausstellung von Ivanovas Performances wird sich zeitlich, und nicht nur räumlich, in verschiedenen «Kapiteln» über mehrere Jahre (so viele wie die aktuelle Direktorin im Amt ist) erstrecken und immer dann stattfinden, wenn die Notwendigkeit für eine Arbeit besteht, Teil dieser «Retrospektive» zu werden. Ongoing Retrospective (Chapter 1) zeigt eine kürzlich entstandene Performance Ivanovas Eine Auswahl an älteren, aktuellen und zukünftigen Werken wird im Laufe der Zeit in fortlaufender Weise Schritt für Schritt, den Entwicklungen im Werk der Künstlerin folgend, präsentiert werden.
